All pens that are built in our shop are sanded in 6 steps from 180 grit to 600 grit, leaving a fine, smooth surface. They are then finished with one of the following:
CA (plastic): Ten to fifteen coats of CA are applied to give it a high gloss finish. It is then wet-sanded in 6 additional steps to 12,000 grit, then buffed to a brilliant shine.
Polyurethane: Numerous thin coats of polyurethane are applied and then high-speed buffed to provide a high sheen.
Friction Polish: A combination of shellac and wax are applied on the lathe at high speed. The heat generated from the friction fuses the polish into the wood. This finish leaves a natural feel to the wood while also provided a nice shine.
